Spy x Family Seasons 1–3 Recap: Everything So Far

Twilight is the best spy Westalis has. His new job, Operation Strix, is to get close to Donovan Desmond, a politician in rival Ostania whose party could start a war. The catch is that Desmond almost never shows up in public, except at events for his son’s very exclusive school, Eden Academy.

So Twilight becomes Loid Forger, a psychiatrist, and needs a kid fast. He adopts Anya from an orphanage. What he doesn’t know is that she can read minds, and she has already worked out that her new dad is a spy. She thinks it’s the coolest thing that has ever happened to her.

The school wants two parents, so Loid also needs a wife. He meets Yor Briar, a city hall clerk who needs a fake partner so people stop asking why she’s single. By night Yor is an assassin. After one chaotic party the two of them get married on the spot, each believing the other is an ordinary person.

Yor moves in and the interview prep is a disaster. At the real interview, a teacher named Murdoch Swan tries to provoke them, and Loid shuts it down hard. Another teacher, Henry Henderson, has liked the family from the start and backs them up. Anya gets in off the waiting list. To celebrate she makes Loid act out a scene from her favorite cartoon, Spy Wars.

There are two ways in for Loid. Anya can earn eight Stella Stars and become an Imperial Scholar, which gets the family invited to events Desmond attends. Or she can befriend Desmond’s younger son, Damian. On her first day she punches Damian in the face, and gets a Tonitrus Bolt, which is the opposite of a star.

Loid makes her apologize. She does, and Damian, who is embarrassed and possibly has a crush on her, refuses to accept it.

Then Yuri shows up. He’s Yor’s younger brother, he adores her, and he works for the State Security Service, the secret police who hunt spies. He grills Loid at dinner, gets drunk, and demands they prove the marriage is real by kissing. Yor slaps him instead. Loid figures out what Yuri does for a living. Yuri still has no idea what Loid does.

At school, Anya and Damian end up on the same side of a dodgeball match against a much bigger kid. Damian takes a hit for her and they lose anyway. Anya finally gets her first Stella Star after she uses her powers to save a boy from drowning, and asks for a dog as her reward. The family also spends a day at the aquarium, where Loid has to get a microfilm off a penguin.

Loid gets pulled into stopping Keith Kepler’s group, who plan to use trained dogs as bombs to start a war. Anya wanders off after a big white dog and ends up in the terrorists’ hideout. The dog can see the future, and Anya sees what he sees.

In his visions Loid dies in a bomb blast. Anya and Yor manage to change what happens, Loid runs Keith down, and Keith is arrested after a crash.

The Forgers adopt the dog. Anya names him Bond, after the hero of her favorite show.

Yor worries she isn’t much of a wife or mother and might get replaced, so she learns to cook a stew she used to make for Yuri. Franky, Loid’s informant, gets turned down by a woman he likes, and Loid takes him out drinking.

Anya’s midterms land on a new moon, which is when her telepathy stops working, so Yuri tutors her. Loid breaks into the school vault to fix her answers and runs into an amateur spy who calls himself Daybreak. Anya also stops a classmate’s plot to get Damian expelled.

Then Fiona Frost arrives, a WISE agent codenamed Nightfall. She’s quietly in love with Loid and wants to replace Yor in the mission. She keeps a blank face the whole time. Loid and Fiona pose as a married couple to win an underground tennis tournament, where the prize is a painting with a dossier hidden inside. They win. Afterward Fiona challenges Yor to a little tennis match in the park, and Yor flattens her without trying.

Yor is uneasy about Fiona, so Loid takes her on a date to reassure her. It goes badly, then fine. Becky, Anya’s rich best friend, takes her shopping. In the last episode of the season Loid sneaks into an Eden Academy event and has a short conversation with Donovan Desmond at last. Damian gets a moment with his father too, and barely any praise.

Season 2 starts with Yor injured after taking down a group of extremists called the Red Circus. Loid takes her on a date to cheer her up, and a surviving member, working as a waiter, tries to poison her. Anya stops him.

Bond foresees himself dying from Yor’s cooking and spends a whole episode trying to get Loid home before dinner. Henderson takes Damian and his friends to a lake to teach them that fun matters too. Yuri tracks down and arrests a former reporter who has been sending articles to Westalis.

Anya wins some macarons that are supposed to make you smarter. They don’t, but Loid notices she’s surprisingly good at Ancient Language. Franky finds his crush’s lost cat and learns she has a boyfriend. And Yor gets a new assignment.

Yor’s job is to protect Olka Gretcher and her baby son on the cruise ship Princess Lorelei and get them out of the country. By coincidence, Loid and Anya win a trip on the same ship. Yor tells them she’s on a work trip and tries to keep both lives apart.

Olka’s cover gets blown and a whole crowd of assassins comes after them. Yor fights alongside her handler, Matthew McMahon. Anya hears everyone’s thoughts, so she knows what’s going on. She keeps Loid busy so he doesn’t walk in on Yor, and convinces a crowd that one of Yor’s fights is part of a show.

Things get bad on the top deck. A powerful swordsman knocks out Matthew, and Yor is cornered. She thinks about the people she wants to go home to and keeps fighting. Loid finds bombs hidden around the ship and gets rid of them. Anya helps Yor finish the swordsman, and one of the bombs takes out the assassins’ boat. The Gretchers make it out.

The family spends a few days on a resort island. Back at school, Becky’s party story beats Anya’s cruise story, and Anya’s embellishments don’t go down well at home.

Becky watches a romance drama and decides she’s in love with Loid. Her flirting makes Yor think she’s drunk and take her to the hospital. Becky is so impressed by Yor’s strength that she asks Yor to train her.

Fiona spends her time off training in the mountains and is very excited about a souvenir Loid sends her.

Loid tries to train Bond, which brings back bad memories of the lab where Bond was experimented on. Then Bond sees a fire coming and leads Loid into a burning apartment to save a puppy. Loid tells him he’s part of the family, and Anya makes him origami Stella Stars.

The movie came out in Japanese theaters in December 2023 and reached the US the next year. It’s an original story, not taken from the manga, so nothing in it comes up again in Season 3. It fits best after the Season 2 finale.

Loid is worried about being pulled off Operation Strix, so he decides Anya should win a cooking contest at Eden Academy by making the principal’s favorite dish. That means a family trip to the region the dish comes from, and the trip turns into something much bigger than a recipe hunt.

If you like the family more than the spy plot, it’s worth a watch. If you only care about the main story, skip it.

Bond sees an excavator going on a rampage at a carnival. Loid stops the driver and Yor saves an old man. Fiona and Franky team up to get a forger out of the city, and Franky swears he’ll never work with her again.

Anya gets a Tonitrus Bolt from the strict teacher Donna Schlag after handing Damian her handkerchief and forgetting her spare. That leads into the season’s best episodes.

Twilight’s childhood. He was a boy in Westalis who wanted to be a soldier until Ostania attacked his town. As a teenager he joined the army under a false name, looking for revenge. He spared a deserter, who turns out to be Franky. He found out his childhood friends were alive and then lost them again, and a WISE agent recruited him as a spy.

Back in the present, Loid tells Anya she did the right thing helping Damian. WISE protects an Ostanian opera singer from a death threat. Anya gets a second Tonitrus Bolt and asks Loid to tutor her, and he faints.

Yor saves Melinda Desmond, Damian’s mother, at a department store and gets invited into her society of patriotic wives. Loid sees a second way to reach Desmond. Anya worries she’s being replaced and spills food on Damian.

A jealous hospital director tries to get Loid arrested. Franky and Fiona dress up as secret police and haul the director off instead.

Then a Red Circus member, Billy Squire, hijacks the bus taking Anya’s class on a field trip. He wants his comrades released and safe passage out of the country. Anya finds where the buses are and gets a message out. When they strap a bomb to her neck, she reads Billy’s mind and knows it’s fake.

Billy tells Henderson his daughter was killed in a student protest the government covered up. Yuri’s team rescues the second bus. Anya gets Billy to give up, and then another hijacker named Vadim grabs her. Martha, Becky’s maid and bodyguard, puts him down with a taser.

The kids come home. Damian apologizes to Anya for how he’s treated her, Anya gets Stella Stars and is suddenly popular, and the two of them are bickering again by the end of the day.

A short breather first. Loid helps a teacher with nightmares about his wife. Yor gets drunk at a mixer and misreads something Loid says. Damian’s friend Ewen bonds with Anya over space, and Damian is jealous.

Then Winston Wheeler, a WISE mole, runs off with stolen files from both WISE and the SSS, and both agencies race after him. Loid goes to a meeting disguised as Wheeler, and it’s an SSS trap. They spot him by a yellow tie pin.

Loid escapes into the sewers dressed as Yuri, runs into the real Yuri, and knocks him out. Wheeler, the real one, beats an injured Loid and mocks Fiona’s feelings for him. Fiona breaks his arm, and her own.

Fiona wants to kill Wheeler. Loid stops her, because he might be useful later. They get out, but their mole inside the SSS is lost. Loid comes home to Yor, and covers his wound with fake skin so Yuri doesn’t get suspicious.

Where things stand

Loid has one route to Desmond through Anya’s grades and another through Yor’s new friendship with Melinda. Nobody in the family knows the others’ secrets except Anya. Yuri is a little more suspicious of Loid than before. There’s no Season 4 date yet. A franchise event on November 8 is the next place news could show up.
